What is the difference between duplex and super duplex stainless steels?

Duplex and super duplex stainless steels are both types of stainless steels that are known for their excellent corrosion resistance and high-strength properties. Super Duplex stainless steels are based around an alloying addition of 25% chromium, whereas duplex stainless steels are based around an alloying addition of 22% chromium.
What is Duplex Steel?
Duplex steel, also known as duplex stainless steel, is a type of stainless steel that is characterized by its two-phase microstructure, consisting of roughly equal parts of austenite and ferrite. This dual-phase structure gives duplex steel its name and imparts a combination of desirable properties that make it highly valuable in various industrial applications.
What is Super Duplex Stainless Steel?
Super duplex stainless steel is a type of stainless steel alloy that is even more corrosion-resistant and stronger than traditional duplex stainless steel. It is characterized by its two-phase microstructure, consisting of a balanced mixture of austenite and ferrite, similar to duplex stainless steel. However, super duplex stainless steel contains a higher level of alloying elements, particularly chromium, nickel, molybdenum, and nitrogen, which gives it superior performance in corrosive environments and high-stress applications.
Duplex Vs Super Duplex Stainless Steel
Duplex stainless steel typically consists of a balanced mixture of austenite and ferrite phases. It usually contains around 22% chromium, 5-6% nickel, and small amounts of other alloying elements such as molybdenum, nitrogen, and sometimes copper.Super duplex stainless steel has a higher alloy content compared to duplex stainless steel. It contains more chromium (typically 24-26%), more nickel (usually 6-8%), and increased levels of molybdenum and nitrogen. Some super duplex grades also include elements like copper.
Strength:
Super duplex stainless steel generally has higher tensile and yield strength compared to duplex stainless steel. This makes super duplex steel suitable for applications where higher mechanical strength is required.
