Why duplex microstructure matters
Duplex stainless contains substantial austenite and ferrite. The combination generally provides higher proof strength than annealed 304L or 316L and improved resistance to chloride stress-corrosion cracking. Chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen support localized-corrosion resistance.
Properties depend on correct solution annealing and phase balance. Harmful intermetallic precipitation from unsuitable thermal exposure can reduce toughness and corrosion performance, so welding and heat treatment must stay within a qualified window.

Fabrication after machining should include contamination control. Carbon-steel grinding dust or tooling can leave embedded iron, while weld heat tint weakens the local passive surface until removed by qualified cleaning.
Energy and mechanical applications
Oil and gas, desalination, wastewater and other industries use duplex bars for couplings, hangers, bolting and rotating equipment under project specifications. Higher proof strength can be useful, but fatigue, sour service, hydrogen effects and cathodic protection require separate engineering review.
Threaded components need good root geometry, surface finish and galling control. Lubricant or coating must be compatible with the process and assembly requirements.

- Specify UNS S31803 and the applicable bar standard; do not rely on “2205” alone.
- Confirm whether UNS S32205 is permitted or required, because limits are not identical.
- State dimensions, tolerance, straightness, surface and delivery condition.
- Require chemistry, mechanical properties and heat-treatment traceability on the MTC.
- Add ultrasonic testing, corrosion testing, ferrite/phase checks or impact testing when the project requires them.
- Define machining, welding, cleaning, marking and segregation from carbon steel.
